Foraging

These are the tried and true items I use while foraging!

In WA you’ll need a Discover Pass and NW Forest Pass DO NOT FORAGE WITHIN MOUNT RAINIER PARK

I use this to carry my tools, books, blanket, food, and water. It doesn’t have enough airflow for plants

You can use this instead of the backpack. Take the liner out before filling it with plant material

Use this hori-hori for digging roots more shallow roots

For thick plant material like stalks and small branches

For thin plant material like hawthorn flowers/berries

One of the most important rules of foraging is air flow for your plant material. It heats up and begins degrading, so don’t use any sort of sack unless it’s made of mesh. This is why we use baskets.

If you gather Devil’s Club or are digging lots of roots

For loosening up the area around large/deep root balls

For kneeling while digging, picnics, rain guard/wrap, etc

For cutting thick woody stems and branches. Willow/Devils Club

For getting high elder/hawthorn berries
