Natural Sun Protection
4 oz jar
I use this mineral- and plant-based formula on my kids’ skin — and my own — before heading out for a day foraging and frolicking in the sun.
In this handcrafted recipe, wildcrafted St. John’s wort is first infused in olive oil, a preparation that offers mild protection from overexposure to sun. (On fair skin, this oil could be expected to perform on its own for about an hour.) To the infused oil, we then add coconut oil and shea butter, both of which are mildly protective on their own.
To make this blend suitable for longer periods in the sun, we’ve added non-nano zinc oxide, which sits on the skin and acts a physical barrier to the sun’s rays. Rosemary antioxidant is included as a natural preservative.
Wondering about St. John’s wort and photosensitivity? Some people ingesting St. John’s wort extracts have indeed reported increased sensitivity of their skin to sunlight. Typically these individuals have been consuming the tincture in very high doses or taking an isolated extract of a single constituent, hypericin. In contrast, topical preparations of fresh-infused St. John’s wort have been shown to increase resilience to sunlight, and they are generally well tolerated.
Note: This product has not been tested for SPF score and makes no claim to provide broad-spectrum sun protection as defined by the Food and Drug Administration. For best results, limit your time in the sun and wear protective clothing.
All of our plant potions are formulated and hand-crafted by an experienced herbalist and packaged in eco-friendly materials.
DIRECTIONS: Apply this Natural Sun Protection generously and evenly 15 minutes before sun exposure.
INGREDIENTS: Coconut oil*, St. Johns wort- infused olive oil* (Hypericum perforatum)^, shea butter*, non-nano zinc oxide, beeswax, rosemary antioxidant* (Salvia rosmarinus)
(Organic*, homegrown**, wildcrafted^)
Hawthorn & Honey is a labor of love. We ethically forage or grow the vast majority of herbal ingredients in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. All of our wildcrafted wellness products are handmade in small, seasonal batches by our owner, Sara, who is an experienced herbalist and foraging guide. If we’re not able to personally forage or grow an ingredient, then we purchase local and/or organic alternatives whenever possible.
